About us Knights of Columbus Council 15244 History

St. Rita of Cascia Council #15244 was officially instituted on March 22, 2011. The Charter Grand Knight for the council was Myong Hwan "Moo" Eiselstein. The first ever Installation of Officers was conducted on May 21, 2011 by State Deputy William "Bill" McCarthy in the basement of St. Rita Elementary School. St. Rita of Cascia Council #15244 was formed from its parent council, St. Joseph the Worker Council #14516, and it was the first council to be formed in the state in over 2 years.

OUR PATRON SAINT MARGHERITA LOTTI

Margherita Lotti was born in Roccaporena, Italy in 1381. She was baptized in the church of St. Augustine in Cascia and, at a young age, she grew very fond of the local Augustinian nuns of St. Mary Magdalene. She wanted to enter the monastery and join the Augustinian sisters, but her parents arranged for her to marry at the age of 12. Her husband was known to be quick-tempered and abusive, but through prayer and persistence, St. Rita was able to convert him just before he was murdered by a rival family. St. Rita's two sons vowed to avenge their fathers death but they both died in the same year due to illnesses.
With no family left, Margherita attempted to join the Augustinian nuns of St. Mary Magdalene, but she was told that she could not join until she made peace between her husband's family and the one that murdered him. This was considered to be an impossible task, but St. Rita succeeded in bringing peace to both families. She entered the Augustinian convent at the age of 36. Further Reading...

What We Do Internationally

Internationally, the Knights of Columbus is involved with several charitable organizations like the Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Food for Families, and Coats for Kids. In service of the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus created the Catholic Information Service (which provides free literature for Catholics or those wishing to learn about Catholicism), provides monetary support for priestly vocations, and defends the Faith through advocacy and education.

In the community

Although St. Rita of Cascia Council #15244 is only a few months old, it has already made an impact on the community and parish. In October 2011, the council raised money for A Woman's Choice, which is a pregnancy assistance center that encourages expectant mothers to choose life over abortion. The council serves quarterly breakfasts for St. Rita parish and took the lead on this year's picnic. St. Rita of Cascia Council #15244 also has plans to host a blood drive in the Spring of 2012.

Once reviewed, the subordinate council will vote on the application and, if accepted, the applicant will be invited to attend a fraternal induction ceremony called an exemplification.
